Researching Stainless Steel Flatware Made in USA
January 26, 2009 – GREAT NEWS!
Stainless Steel Flatware is Made in USA again! You can find it at
SilverSuperStore. The company mentioned below, Sherrill, will be making the Pearls design for SilverSuperstore. The pattern will be available in March. Other patterns will be available at a later date.
Sept 5, 2008 UPDATE
I’ve located a business called ECO. East Coast Oneida. They sell on Ebay. I understand they do have the Oneida flatware “Made in USA”. However, when dealing with them be clear up front that you will accept nothing less than “Made in USA”.

These past couple of weeks I’ve been concentrating on Stainless Steel Flatware for Jamie. The research was long, tideous, and frustrating.
The long and the short of it is, two Oneida patterns are made in the USA. They are also made overseas. The patterns are Michaelangelo and Juilliard. They are both beautiful patterns. These two patterns are made in the US by a manufacturing company called Sherrill.
The problem is, where can these patterns be purchased where you are assured that they have been made by Sherrill Mfg? I intend to get an answer for this question.. Check back! In the mean time be sure to check the box for origin or call the department store to have them check before you shop.
Also, there seems to be a fair number of silversmiths still making sterling silver flatware in the US.

Did you find a place to purchase where you
could be assured that the pattern was made in
the USA? We are looking for flatware to replace
what we have been using for over 40 years and
found one Oneida box that lists USA along with
four or five other countries. No way of telling
which country it was made in.

Hi! I hope I can help you shed some light on your
quest to find stainless flatware made in the USA.
I’m the owner of a silverware retail shop in
Washington state, and have been an Oneida account
for many years.
Oneida does make a few pieces in their old factory,
which is now run by a company called Sherrill, as
you noted above. Typically, they are only making
knife handles for the Michelangelo and Juilliard
patterns. The other pieces (forks and spoons)
are still made overseas.
Our store has contracted with this factory to start
offering stainless flatware that’s only made in
the USA, and our first pattern will be available
in late March 2009. We hope to have many more patterns
available soon, and all will be made in the old
New York factory.

I am very happy that other Americans are deeply troubled by the lack of choices for things made in the USA. After watching our fellow American’s jobs erode because we prefer to spend less for lesser quality, I make a conscious decision based on where the product was made — when I buy everything from garlic to tools.
I also encourage merchants to list a small American flag or “USA” next to American made products. All this is fine, but we also have to follow through and buy these products when the choice is affordable and well made. Other countries have a far stronger sense of national pride, let’s get that back. There is some good news, since January 2009 the United States is once again the world’s most admired nation. This may well encourage sales of American made goods overseas, especially as the dollar encourages it.

Thanks for that SilverSuperstore link. For me it’s coming down to a question of quality. Products made in China have been of dubious quality and stories about them substituting materials with things that can actually be hazardous are not helping my impressions.
I don’t think China gets held to the same quality standards that American (or Japanese) products do, so I’m ready to buy American flatware. It would be nice to get it through a major retailer, though (like Amazon).

We also are looking for an American-made flatware product. It looks like the SilverSuperstore has the ‘Pearls’ pattern that is made in U.S.A., but can it be purchased in a store? I like to see what I’m buying, and in this case, hold the flatware for the ‘feel’ of it. We recently purchased a set from Bed Bath & Beyond that was pretty pricey – the more the $$ the better the quality, right? Wrong! The flatware has a ‘tinny’ taste. Any idea what causes this?

Tonight I went shopping to purchase stainles steel tableware for my daughter. I went to Target and then to Penneys. It seems that after going through each box, they were either made overseas or had no claim as to where they were made. I see that “Sherrill” makes US tableware. Do you know where we can buy it locally. I hate to buy on line and not get to see what I am getting. I aslo hate to pay shipping charges.

There are fewer and fewer options, but you can still find some on ebay.

I purchased some Revolution/Sherrill flatware (the Lincoln pattern) through Silver Superstore. At first I was a bit wary of purchasing through an online retailer that I wasn’t familiar with, but I did some research over the span of a few months, and saw that they have an actual physical store just outside of Seattle, WA and a good record with BBB. I ordered two different patterns before deciding on the Lincoln. Both were medium weight flatware, which I would roughly describe as being heavier and sturdier than something you’d find at Target, but lighter than the heavier sets you’d find at Crate & Barrel (like Stanton and Grand Hotel). They are also less expensive than the Crate & Barrel sets, so that is a plus. The size of the flatware is perfect, too–it’s the more traditional size I remember growing up with: small teaspoons and salad forks, normal sized spoon and dinner fork, instead of the huge over-sized soup spoons and dinner forks that are available in most stores.

Sherrill Manufacturing (www.sherrillmfg.com) makes flatware at their factory in Sherrill, NY. The products are sold through a factory outlet located next to the factory ar on line at http://www.libertytabletop.com
I visited the store today and saw all the patterns, and chose a set of the pattern “Weave.” It feels and weighs right, and appears very well-made.

Would love to buy top quality stainless that is made in the USA. My old Oneida Venetian set is 43 years old and is just lately begging to look tired. I’m really leary of laying out about $1000 for a new Oneida premium service for 24 and receive inferior quality. So many reviews of all foreign made brands talk of the poor quality so I hope Sherrill makes a very successful re-entry into this industry!
